Thump a Melon?
Can you really tell whether a melon is ripe by listening to it while thumping? Well perhaps if you are a percussionist with a well trained ear, you might just get the knack of doing this, but for the rest of us thumping a melon doesn't really tell us much about it's ripeness.   I'm not sure where this myth actually started, but I sure can't tell one melon from beating on it, and I'm not so sure the melon turns out to be any better for the practice either.   OK, so how do you tell if the melon is ripe?   Well the real answer is to smell the melon at the stem. Find the point on the melon where it was connected to the vine and sniff.   If it smells sweet, then the melon is ripe and ready to use.
When you add melons to your grocery list use mygrocerylist.info where you can add melons and anything else you would like to your own personal online grocery list that you can access from home, work, or a mobile device.   Leave the melon thumping to the percussionists. |
